Madaba, a small town in central Jordan, is renowned for its significant Christian community and its important Byzantine archaeological park. The city, located less than 40 kilometers from Amman, features over 150 churches, including the famous Madaba Map, a detailed mosaic map of Palestine. Known as the "City of Mosaics," Madaba was a key early Christian station on the pilgrimage route from Jerusalem to Mount Nebo. Today, it exemplifies religious tolerance, with Christians and Muslims living harmoniously. The Madaba Map, located in St. George's Church, dates back to the 6th century and depicts Jerusalem and parts of the Holy Land.

Kerak, located 1,000 meters above sea level and 120 kilometers from Amman, is the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Moab, known biblically as Qir-Heres. The city features the ruins of a Crusader fortress, comparable to the "Crac des Chevaliers." Established as a lordship in 1140, it later came under Renault de Chatillon's control. The town's triangular plateau hosts the castle at its southern tip, with distinct Crusader and later Arab masonry. Approaching from the King's Highway or the Dead Sea, the castle's silhouette highlights its historical importance.

Starting at an elevation of nearly 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above sea level, the trail initially descends steeply before transitioning into a more gradual descent through the Dana Biosphere Reserve towards Feynan. As you approach the entrance to Wadi Ghweir, the trail ascends through the mountains. This section is steep and challenging, but the stunning vistas make it worthwhile. By afternoon, you will reach the camp in Wadi Malaga, where you can relax and rejuvenate under a desert sky filled with twinkling stars.

From the village, a well-maintained track descends into the long valley of Wadi Dana, surrounded by splendid sandstone scenery. Follow the trail down the valley to the award-winning Feynan Eco Lodge, located in an area rich with Roman copper mines. If you are not staying overnight at the lodge, continue down the valley as it opens up, reaching Bedouin camps with available camping facilities. Nearby, you can explore Roman ruins and copper smelting sites, making it an excellent spot to watch the sunset.

Dinner and overnight stay in a bivouac at Wadi Malaga. Your luggage will be transported by a 4x4 Jeep to Wadi Malaga.

After breakfast, depart early in the morning from Wadi Malaga towards Ras Al-Feid. Begin your ascent on a beautifully constructed trail with switchbacks through jagged rocky mountain outcroppings. Take a break to enjoy the expansive view of Wadi Araba’s wash to the west below. Continue along the same path up a wide slot, following the old Bedouin route reinforced with juniper branch bridges and well-graded switchbacks. The slot widens at the top, where you reach the saddle called Ras Naqb Shdeid, offering breathtaking views in both directions. This is the last point with phone signal before Jabal Safaha the following day. Reflect on the fact that you are walking the ancient main route between Bir al-Saba and Shobak.

Descend from the saddle, following the old path to the right, which cuts the steep grade down at the top and flattens as it winds to the left, following a small gully to meet the perennially spring-fed Wadi Feid below. Turn right along Wadi Feid to access a pool above a large dry waterfall, perfect for cooling down and washing up. The stream/spring in Wadi Feid is the last reliable water source before Little Petra (approximately 24 km away).

Retrace your steps and follow Wadi Feid upstream through thick vegetation, carefully watching for a good footpath on the left side of the wadi. Pass the remains of an old Nabatean water channel, and be prepared to wade through shallow sections of water near the canals. Pass the spring on your right and continue up the wadi around the bend. The geology shifts to dark purple sandstone just before a split in the wadi, where an impressive juniper tree sits above the junction with roots wrapping around the rock to the wadi floor. The stage ends here, with campsite options available both on and off the route.

Dinner and overnight stay in a bivouac at Ras Al-Feid. Your luggage will be transported by a 4x4 Jeep to Ras Al-Feid.

- Departure: Begin your journey with a 3-hour hike from Rass Al Feith to the Sufah area, home to the Nabatean springs. Along the way, you'll be treated to stunning views of Wadi Araba and gradually approach the ancient Nabatean agricultural sites, including their historic vine farms and the first settlements in the region.

Afternoon:

- Continued Hike: After a brief rest, continue your hike for another 3 hours towards Qbour Al Wehedat. This part of the trail is marked by the towering black mountain peaks and steep canyon drops, offering unforgettable vistas. As you ascend, you'll reach magnificent heights with sweeping views over the desert landscape. Nearing the end of your hike, you'll notice signs of increased human habitation, such as Bedouin camps, sheep pens, and small agricultural plots, leading you to the Ghbour Whedat area.

- Dinner and Overnight: Enjoy a well-deserved dinner and overnight stay in a bivouac at Qbour Al Wehedat.

- Departure: Embark on a 3-hour walk towards Tareq ALFaresh (Qaroon). Along the way, explore Little Petra, the former Nabatean caravanserai featuring Siq Albared, Nabatean facades, cisterns, and triclinium rooms.

Afternoon:

- Continued Hike: After a brief rest, continue your journey with a 4-hour walk along the shepherds' path to the Neolithic site of Beidah. En route, you'll encounter various Nabatean ruins, including wine and olive presses, aqueducts, and other ancient water infrastructure. Your hike will culminate at Little Petra, believed by archaeologists to have been a suburb of Petra where Silk Road traders would stay overnight.

- Dinner and Overnight: Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the Little Petra Bedouin Camp.

One of the seven Wonders of the World, Petra, speaks to the imagination of everyone who has seen pictures, or perhaps even movies, of the Treasury facade carved out of the rock.

For good reason, this sight is on many bucket lists, but you may be surprised to find that the Treasury is only a small part of an ancient city covering a surface of approximately 5 square miles. There are dozens of other incredible constructions such as the Royal Tombs, the Theatre, the Temples and a Monastery to experience, as well.

As most visitors explore the Petra site through the "classical trail", the places can get a little congested, and Petra’s popularity will become very apparent. There is however an alternative: a (sort of) secret trail called ‘The Back Door Trail to Petra’, which allows you to walk to Petra on an old Bedouin trail, without the crowds.

The trail starts at Little Petra, a site north of the actual site of Petra where you will also find some rock-carved facades and buildings. After a short uphill section, you will be spoiled with incredible views over a valley surrounded by rugged mountains. The trail continues to go gently up and down over a beautifully maintained mountain path accompanied by stunning views throughout your walk. Though not the easiest, the hike is accessible for people with varying levels of fitness.

Take your time along this Bedouin trail to appreciate the scenery and fear not, locals have put up stalls along the way, so you won’t go thirsty while you’re taking a break. Just over an hour into the hike you will be rewarded with the marvellous sight of the Monastery or Ad Deir in Arabic. Arguably one of the most iconic monuments in the Petra Archaeological Park.
